Frequently Asked Questions

Is pulse diagnosis used on its own to make a diagnosis?

No. While pulse diagnosis is an important tool, it is rarely used alone to come to a complete diagnosis and still needs to be paired with a proper intake and physical examination. It is most helpful when differentiating between several possible causes.

How does a practitioner perform pulse diagnosis?

The practitioner examines the pulse at six different locations on the wrist for rate, depth, strength, width, and quality. Each characteristic of the pulse signifies a different organ and area, and the issues that may affect it. For example, a choppy pulse at the distal position on the left wrist may indicate chest pain or angina due to a heart condition.

What is Chinese Pulse Diagnosis?

Chinese Pulse Diagnosis is a traditional technique used to identify malfunctioning organs or areas of the body by feeling the radial artery at the patient’s wrist. It has been used for thousands of years and is a convenient, inexpensive, painless, and non-invasive method of coming to a diagnosis.

Who should avoid cosmetic acupuncture?

Cosmetic acupuncture is not recommended for current smokers and pregnant women.

How many treatments do I need, and are there any side effects?

We highly recommend 10 sessions over the course of 5 weeks for best results, as effects are cumulative, though noticeable results are often seen within the first 3-4 sessions. There are virtually no side effects except occasional light bruising, which usually dissipates quickly. Results are typically noticeable for 3-6 months, so maintenance sessions about once a month are recommended.

What happens during a typical cosmetic acupuncture visit?

Your first visit includes a discussion of your cosmetic concerns and a review of your medical history. Typically 10-14 body points are used to promote inner vitality and detoxification, followed by tiny needles inserted roughly 0.5cm into the facial skin for about 25 minutes, then a dermaroller treatment with creams and lotions. The entire session can take up to an hour.

What does cosmetic acupuncture do for the skin?

Cosmetic acupuncture helps reduce wrinkles, gently lift the face, increase facial vitality, improve skin colour and texture, tighten the pores, brighten the eyes, and reduce acne, by stimulating circulation and promoting collagen production.

Does ear acupuncture require needles?

Not necessarily. Ear acupuncture can be done without needles, using magnetic pellets taped to specific points that the patient can stimulate themselves throughout the week, giving the benefit of a mini-acupuncture treatment on its own or alongside regular acupuncture.

What conditions can ear acupuncture treat?

The ear can be used to treat many different disorders including arthritis, headaches/migraines, and menstrual issues, and can even help people quit smoking.

What is ear acupuncture (Auricular Therapy)?

Ear acupuncture, also known as Auricular Therapy, is a form of treatment that stimulates very specific points along the ear. Several different systems have been discovered for mapping these points.
