The number of acupuncture treatments required can greatly differ from person to person, underscoring the significance of the initial consultation at our clinic. Individuals in the early stages of diagnosis may only need 3 to 6 sessions, while those further along may require 10 to 20 sessions to effectively regain their vision.
Yes. You can safely receive acupuncture treatments concurrently with your eye injections. In fact, we have had patients who, after undergoing our acupuncture therapies, found they no longer needed their eye injections, as confirmed by their doctors. Just be sure to wait at least a week after your eye injection before scheduling your acupuncture session to allow your eye adequate time to heal.
NO! None of the acupuncture needles will come close to your eyes. The nearest points are gently placed around your eyebrows and cheekbones. You may also experience some points being utilized on your hands and feet.
Absolutely. For both forms of macular degeneration, our approach focuses on enhancing blood circulation to the eye, which helps to activate any dormant photoreceptor cells in the macula. This process not only aims to improve vision but also works to preserve it. In the case of wet macular degeneration, we can also help reduce the number of small leaky veins, potentially decreasing the need for injections from your doctor.
Approximately 80% of our patients experience an improvement in their vision after treatment, which can manifest as enhanced clarity in central vision or reduced fogginess or blurriness. While we can activate dormant photoreceptor cells to enhance vision, we are unable to revive those that are permanently damaged. Some patients notice a change after their first treatment, while others may need 5-6 treatments.
Yes. Acupuncture is incredibly safe and will not worsen your macular degeneration. The only minor side effects are related to the local needling, which may include light bruising, tenderness, or a slight feeling of fatigue.
No. There is currently no known cure for macular degeneration. Our treatments can improve vision and stabilize the effects of macular degeneration, but the condition will always be present and will always require management.
During your initial visit, we conduct a thorough assessment of your vision and overall health, including a series of eye tests to evaluate your current eye health and establish a baseline. We also review your general health to uncover any underlying factors affecting your eye condition, then discuss recommendations including supplements, exercises, self-care strategies, and a proposed care plan.
